Lorikeets we currently Breed are:
We have a small collection of Australian Cockatoos in mist cases we only have the on pair of each Species but we have a wide range of contacts from Queensland to Western Australia so making unrelated young will not be a problem in most cases
Our Cockatoos are also fed a measured amount of seed per week so they do not get over weight and un healthy they are also fed a variety of seven fruit and vege on Monday, Wednesday & Friday during the off season with almonds given to them on a when I feel like it basis
During the breeding season the Parrots get a measured amount of our seed mix , Fresh fruit, vege & nuts every day with liquid calcium added every second day and every other day they get a multi vitamin supplement
All Cockatoos are wormed just before the breeding season in July and just after the breeding season in February or March depending if their still raising young in the nest. Their wormed with a water diluted bird wormer put on to their Fresh fruit, vege mix and in their water we found this is the easiest way to make sure their wormed short of cropping them
Our Cockatoos are housed in both suspended & conventional aviaries measuring
Suspended's Measure
1200 High x 1200 Wide x 3000 Long
Conventional's Measure
2300 High x 1200-2500 Wide x 2400 Deep
We use combination of nest box’s and Logs to suit that particular pairs needs and likings
Logs and box’s are removed after the breeding season cleaned and stored ready for the next season as Parrots do not require a nest box all year round
The nesting material (fine wood shavings) is placed in the bottom of the box to a depth of five cm and fresh branches are added to the aviary every 2-3 days as needed for the Cockatoos to finnish off their nests and arrange it as they see fit
When there is young in the nest we DON’T change the nesting material once a week like we do with all our other birds as I was born with two thumbs and eight fingers and would like to keep it that way !! :)
